Methanol is a colourless, tasteless, highly volatile, and flammable liquid alcohol that is toxic if swallowed. It is an important organic chemical raw material which is mainly used to produce formaldehyde, MTBE and acetic acid, which is a vital raw material for producing various kinds of resin. As methanol has better solubility than ethanol, it is also used to produce paint. Methanol is a good fuel and has been used as an energy resource in some power stations.

Methanol protein, which is rich in vitamins and protein and is nutritious and has low cost and is widely used for feeding animals, poultry and fishes, can be produced from methanol after fermentation using micro-organisms.
